How We Vet Pros
How Local Jersey Pros reviews contractor listings
Local Jersey Pros checks New Jersey contractor listings against public license or registration sources, insurance proof, and complaint signals before treating a profile as verified. Homeowners should still re-check credentials directly before hiring because licenses, insurance, and availability can change.

NJ Division of Consumer Affairs license verification
At listing creation, Local Jersey Pros checks applicable New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs records through the official license verification search. Verified profiles are scheduled for re-check every 6 months.
HIC registration where applicable
For home improvement work, Local Jersey Pros checks whether a contractor appears to have a Home Improvement Contractor registration where that standard applies. Electricians, plumbers, and some other trades may use separate state license types instead of HIC registration.
Insurance proof on file
Verified listings require minimum general liability proof on file. When available, the insurance verification date is shown on the contractor profile so homeowners can see when the record was last reviewed.
Complaint screening
Local Jersey Pros reviews BBB signals and available New Jersey consumer complaint history before marking a listing verified. A complaint does not automatically disqualify a business, but unresolved patterns, license discipline, or misleading conduct can block or remove a listing.
What gets a listing removed
A listing may be removed or downgraded for expired or unverifiable licensing, missing insurance proof, deceptive business identity, fake reviews, unresolved serious complaints, unsafe or unlawful conduct, repeated homeowner spam complaints, or refusal to correct inaccurate information.
Verify it yourself
Local Jersey Pros makes re-verification easy because the directory should be a starting point, not a black box. Before hiring, search the contractor through official state tools, ask for current insurance proof, confirm permit responsibility, and make sure the business name on paperwork matches the company you called.
- Open the NJ DCA license verification search.
- Search by company name, owner name, license number, or HIC registration number.
- Confirm the status is active and the trade or registration type matches the work.
- Ask the contractor for current insurance proof and compare the named business.
- Search BBB and public complaint sources for patterns before signing.
